Similar to the recent storm hit the northern region the previous evening, City overwhelmed United away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil triumph for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled consecutive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

The Red Devils' capability to manage domestic and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked fatigued throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in opposition, have no similar fitness worries. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose potent attack played with and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This placed City completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. In advance of this match, United had let in just six in this WSL season but they fell apart in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her physicality to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything early on, exploiting the room left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her passes were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of forays forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, on the other hand, dominated possession, probing their opponents and trying to lure them of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the far post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the season.

They added to their lead with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to maraud through the center from central defence, the pitch opened up for City. The prominent Casparij collected the pass on the right before sending a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a swift turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the match. Former City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who placed above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
